Brief Description:

The integrated, automatic object recognition system can detect simultaneously up to 20 stationary or moving objects in the path of a vehicle. By comparing the current speed, the motion vector and fixed parameters such as the braking distance, the collision probability is calculated by the 3D sensor and transferred to the machine control system via CAN bus or Ethernet, and then signalled to the driver.

Key Features and Other Technical Information:
  • The 3D Smart Sensor detects both the position and movement of objects in its field of view.
  • An adjustable reference point on the vehicle allows for, as an example, only obstacles of a predefined height above ground to be detected.

Use Cases

Additional Information

Reduce Likelihood of Collision:
The sensor can be installed on mobile equipment. The equipment operators can receive alerts when an object or person is within proximity. Emergency stops can be automatically engaged if the operator does not react in time.

Summary & Insights
  • The cold rolling mill Risse + Wilke Kaltband GmbH in Iserlohn produces metal sheets of different thickness and quality.
  • Heavy forklift trucks move throughout the entire plant, delivering and collecting material.
  • A driver can find it difficult to see people behind the forklift truck.
  • ifm’s 3D collision warning system was installed to monitor the rear area of the forklift truck.
  • Florian Rolf, production manager at Risse + Wilke reported that the system was good at minimising risk. He was able to use it on forklift trucks to prevent employees from entering the danger zone, and therefore prevent a dangerous or risky situation from occurring.
